Verizon Wireless Samsung DROID Prime

Verizon Wireless Samsung DROID Prime

Verizon Wireless Samsung DROID Prime

BGR has exclusively learned from a close source of ours that Verizon Wireless has passed on offering the Samsung GALAXY S II in favor of something even better. We reported last week that Verizon isn’t going to sell the GALAXY S II, and we have now been told why. Apparently, “Verizon doesn’t think the Samsung GALAXY S II will be competitive with the iPhone 5 when it launches.” Instead, not only is Verizon launching the Samsung DROID Prime, a device that is sure to be the new flagship Android phone ahead of the holidays, but the company will have the handset as an exclusive. The DROID Prime is expected to be the first smartphone to launch with Android 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich,” and we have been told the model number is SCH-i515. According to our source, the phone should launch sometime in October. Verizon Wireless did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple launch again Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1 Android tablet 2012

Samsung has again delayed the launch of its GALAXY Tab 10.1 Android tablet in Australia amid an ongoing patent dispute with Apple. This time, Samsung has stated in court that it will not market or sell its 10-inch Honeycomb tablet until September 30th at the earliest. While the repeated launch delays are no doubt victories for Apple, which claims the Tab 10.1 infringes on multiple Apple-owned patents, Samsung won’t stick to a defensive stance for much longer. Samsung in a statement confirmed that it “intends to file a cross claim against Apple Australia and Apple Inc regarding the invalidity of the patents previously asserted by Apple and also a cross claim against Apple regarding violation of patents held by Samsung by selling its iPhones and iPads.” The next hearing in Apple’s case against Samsung in Australia is scheduled for September 26th.

AT&T’s 4G LTE network live in Chicago

AT&T’s 4G LTE network went live this past weekend in the Chicago area, and initial speed tests reveal impressive download speeds. AT&T has yet to announce the availability of LTE service in Chicago or any other launch market, but BGR has obtained exclusive images and speed test results from a source who has tested the network there. Ahead of an official launch, AT&T 4G LTE service is likely to be available only intermittently during testing, though it is also possible that Chicago has been soft launched following the launch of AT&T’s first two 4G LTE devices last week.

Amazon could ‘easily’ sell Q4 Android tablets

Amazon could ‘easily’ sell Q4 Android tablets

According to a report issued by Forrester Research on Monday, Amazon could “easily” sell between 3 and 5 million tablets during the fourth quarter of this year if it prices the tablet “significantly” below the iPad and can meet customer demand. “Thus far, Apple has faced many would-be competitors, but none have gained significant market share,” Forrester Research analyst Sarah Rotman Epps wrote. “Not only does Amazon have the potential to gain share quickly but its willingness to sell hardware at a loss, as it did with the Kindle, makes Amazon a nasty competitor.” The online retailer has yet to announce its tablet, but BGR exclusively reported that Amazon has two Android-powered models coming down the pipeline, including an entry-level dual-core “Coyote” tablet and an NVIDIA quad-core Kal-El-powered “Hollywood” slate. “If Amazon’s Android-based tablet sells in the millions, Android will suddenly appear much more attractive to developers who have taken a wait-and-see approach,” Epps added. According to a report issued on Friday, Amazon’s success could be driven by its effort to undercut the price of Apple’s iPad by “hundreds” of dollars.

Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T mobile payment battle with Google

Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile have made a $100 million investment in ISIS, a joint venture created by the three carriers to fuel the growth of mobile payments. The investment has been largely viewed as an attempt to bolster ISIS’ business to better compete against Google and its own mobile payment system, Google Wallet. “Over the long haul, operators have to create new businesses that derive value from more than access,” wireless analyst Chetan Sharma told Bloomberg. “It’s a given that people are going to be transacting more over cell phones. It could open a potential new revenue stream for them.” Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T formed ISIS in November of last year and hope, by partnering, the carriers can launch a competitive nationwide mobile payment network that utilizes near-field communications. In June, American Express, Discover, MasterCard and Visa announced a partnership with ISIS. MasterCard has also teamed up with Google and Sprint on Google Wallet. ISIS is currently being tested in Salt Lake City and Austin, and while the joint venture plans to bring those networks live in mid-2012, ISIS has not yet announced a national rollout plan.

Sprint’s Samsung Galaxy S II Mobile Phone

Samsung is preparing to announce the Galaxy S II for Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T during a press event on Tuesday and one day ahead of the announcement, official images for Sprint’s model have been leaked. We exclusively reported earlier this month that Sprint will dub its device the “Epic Touch 4G,” and it will pack a dual-core processor, a Super AMOLED Plus display, a forward-facing camera for video chats, an 8-megapixel camera capable of shooting HD video and more. We’re digging the textured back of the Epic Tough 4G and it appears Samsung was able to keep the phone just as thin as its European counterpart despite packing in a 4G WiMAX radio. We’ll be live reporting from Samsung’s press conference at 6:00 p.m. EST tomorrow, so stay tuned for more details.
