Former NBA star Mel Turpin was found dead inside his Lexington home last July 8, 2010.
According to the Washington Post, the coroner at the scene said that Mel had died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 49.
Mel had attended the University of Kentucky before being drafted as the sixth overall pick of the Washington Bullets. In the 1984 NBA draft, he was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The athlete’s full name is Melvin Harrison Turpin. During his stint at the NBA, he earned the nicknames “The Mealman” and “Dinner Bell Mel”.
