We caught a glimpse of a Verizon-branded Windows Phone 8 handset by the name of Atlas in a leaked image yesterday, and now new photos give us a closer look at the smartphone. According to WMPoweruser, who received the photos from a tipster, the device is a Nokia Lumia 820 variant and will be exclusive to Big Red as the Lumia 822. Though it’s riffed on its progenitor’s design, the mobile will keep the same WVGA resolution and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera. There’s still no official word from Verizon or Nokia regarding the phone, but we expect that to change relatively soon.

Other amenities include WiFi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 and 3G/4G (LTE) radios along with dual cameras (2MP in front, 5MP in back), NFC and a fingerprint reader. There’s a SIM slot, headphone jack, mini HDMI output and two USB 3.0 ports on the right side of the device, plus a proprietary power / docking connector on the bottom edge. A 45Wh slide-out Li-Ion battery is located on the left side.

Color us not-too-shocked if it’s true, but the Verge has reported that AT&T will begin taking orders for Windows Phone 8 models from the likes of Nokia and HTC on October 21st. Microsoft has already sent invites around for a formal launch of the new smartphone OS for October 29th in San Francisco, so it would make sense for AT&T to start building its own list a week or so ahead of that. The company will also (supposedly) start taking your money for its US-exclusive Samsung Ativ Smart PC and Asus Vivo Tab RT on that day, which also jibes well with Redmond’s Windows 8 launch event on October 25th. Availability of those devices is rumored to be the day after (October 26th), while eager Windows Phone 8 users will get their hands on those models “in early November,” according to the source. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for confirmation, though it would be more surprising if all the order-taking didn’t commence around those dates.
